DESCRIPTION:What role does memory play in four novels spanning the last 
 four decades? We will read authors from the Netherlands\, England\, the 
 US\, and Bulgaria\, who wrestle with both the burden and sanctuary of 
 recollection. How do these narratives navigate the space between myth and 
 memory? Be prepared for a lively discussion.\n\nSamantha Harvey\, THE 
 WILDERNESS (2009) - Jake is in the tailspin of old age. His wife has passed 
 away\, his son is in prison\, and\, as Alzheimer’s takes hold of him\, 
 his memories have become increasingly unreliable. What happened to his 
 daughter? Is she alive\, or long dead? Why is his son imprisoned? And why 
 can’t he shake the memory of a yellow dress and one lonely\, echoing 
 gunshot?\n\nThe Wilderness holds us in its grip from the first sentence to 
 the last with the sheer beauty of its language and its ruminations on love 
 and loss.\n\n \n\nThank you for your interest in one or more of the 
 sessions with Mark this fall. We wanted to share information on the 
 availability of each book with you. Some of these titles are hard to find. 
 The library has purchased some copies but cannot guarantee that we will 
 have enough for everyone.\n\nThe Following Story by Cees Nooteboom – not 
 available in our library system or on digital platforms. Only available to 
 purchase as used copy online. We purchased a few copies.\n\nThe Wilderness 
 by Samantha Harvey – 7 copies available to check out now. The audiobook 
 is available on hoopla.\n\nAudition by Katie Kitamura – widely available 
 – we should be able to borrow enough copies for everyone.\n\nDeath and 
 the Gardener by Gorgi Gospodinov- very hard to find\; will be published in 
 paperback on September 8\; audiobook available on hoopla\, we will try to 
 buy a few copies. You may have to purchase your own copy of the Gospodinov. 
  If you borrow a copy from us\, please return once read\, so we can share 
 copies.
